Although most brokers advise against Maroney's suggestion and recommend that you pick one broker and tell that person everything about your business so he or she can help you, not all brokers are eager to devote hours and hours advising small business people. Furthermore, you may not be able to find a qualified broker in your area and may have to deal with someone on the phone. Regardless, considering all the options, if you can find and experienced broker who is interested in working with you, it is in your best interest to listen to his or her advice. A wise, experienced broker's list savvy may be the best advice you can get in direct marketing.

 

Some brokers can look at your product or service and tell you exactly which lists to use, and when and how to conduct your initial mailings. This is not to say you should not learn as much as you can about using lists on your own. You should still do your own independent research first, then ask for recommendations from professionals.

 

Not everyone recommends relying on a list broker. Although mailing list brokers are knowledgeable, they usually don't know as much about any given list as the list's manager does. To get the most accurate information about lists, Tim Maroney from HDM Worldwide Direct recommends working directly with managers, rather than a single list broker. In addition, some mailers think that brokers who are also managers might favor their own lists over others.

You and your broker/compiler select lists and place an order. If you're doing it yourself or are a new customer of the list owner, you will have to pay in advance. Once you are an established list renter, fees can be paid after your mailing has been made, a cash-flow advantage for you.

List managers usually require you to send them one or more copies of your mailer before they agree to rent a list to you. They want to see if your offer competes with their own. Some list owners will not rent to competitors, others charge more. List owners/managers also want to know when you're planning to mail so that they can coordinate any mailings they may be planning. When you see SMP required it means they want a sample mailing piece.

 

Your rental agreement permits you to mail just once to everyone on the list. To be sure you don't abuse the agreement, list managers salt their lists with names and addresses so that they will receive your mailings. These decoys or seeds allow brokers to keep track of list activity and maintain files of all mailings sent out to their lists.

 

Not all brokers are going to be this thorough, but this gives you an idea of the type of help a broker can provide. You don't need to volunteer to brokers that you intend to rent no more than X number of names, but don't try to deceive them into thinking you're going to launch a gigantic campaign just to get their expert advice.

 

If you do mail the same offer twice, wait a week between mailings.
